چکیده

Fatty infiltration of the liver may be produced experimentally in animals by various means, including dietary restriction of proteins, of choline or choline precursors, or of vitamins, as well as the use of hepatotoxins (1). The lesions produced may progress to a pathologic picture resembling that of cirrhosis in human beings. Although it is not universally agreed that the pathogenesis of human cirrhosis is similar to that in animals, many investigators have felt that fatty infiltration represents an intermediate phase, which, while reversible, may also progress to cirrhosis. It has been noted in experimental animals that methionine and choline have a lipotropic action, preventing the deposition of fat in the liver as well as enhancing its removal (2). This effect is thought to result from an increase in the formation and the turnover of phospholipides (3). Indeed, in experimental animals with fatty infiltration of the liver induced by diet, it has been shown by the use of radiophosphorus that choline or methionine will cause an increase in the phospholipide turnover in the liver (4, 5). In human beings the therapeutic value of choline and methionine in the treatment of certain forms of chronic hepatitis, with or without the presence of fatty infiltration of the liver, is open to question (6). Numerous observers have noted a reduction in liver size and both clinical and laboratory evidence of improvement which they felt could be attributed directly to the use of choline or

The effects of lipotropic factors on phospholipide turnover in the plasma of normal persons as indicated by radioactive phosphorus.

The action of choline and methionine in preventing or curing the fatty infiltration of the liver which is produced experimentally in animals by low protein diets is believed to result from an increased turnover of phospholipides in the liver (1, 2). Since this organ is the main, if not the sole, source of phospholipides in plasma (3), it would seem that changes in the formation of phospholipide...

Effects of Lipotropic Products on Productive Performance, Liver Lipid and Enzymes Activity in Broiler Chickens

In a 42-d experiment, 576 one-day-old Vencobb 308 broiler chicks were used to investigate the effects of lecithin extract (0.5 g/kg), choline chloride 60% (1 g/kg) and Bio choline (1 g/kg) in diets of moderate and high energy in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement on performance and certain physiological traits in broiler chickens. The inclusion of Bio choline and lecithin extract in the diet signifi...

اثر اختلال کارکرد کبد بر لیپوپروتیین‌های سرم در بیماران دچار سیروز و هپاتیت مزمن

Background: The liver plays a main role in the production and metabolism of lipoproteins, and then impaired lipid metabolism is often seen in patients with liver cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis (CH). As a result, plasma lipid levels could be as useful indicators of liver function and patient's prognosis especially in liver cirrhosis. Methods: We measured the lipoprotein levels in 77 consecutiv...

دیابت و اختلال تحمل گلوکز در بیماران مبتلا به بیماری مزمن کبدی

Alterations in carbohydrate metabolism are frequently observed in cirrhosis. We conducted this study to define the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD), and explore the factors that may be potentially associated with the development of DM in these patients. Methods: From October 2002 to March 2003, 185 consecutive...

The effect of threonine deficiency on the synthesis of some phosphorus fractions in the rat.

Rats on diets containing suboptimal amounts of threonine or lysine have been observed to develop fatty livers, which could be controlled by adequate dietary levels of these amino acids (2). Choline was also lipotropic, but only at high levels, at which its activity was still limited in extent. The liver lipide pattern in these amino acid deficiencies was found to be suggestive of that observed ...
